![]() ![]() Jason Clarke plays Anne Hathaway's second husband in the film. "As much as we love this film and still hope it finds its audience, we tested and retested the film - with audiences and critics alike - and sadly, the data demonstrated that the film was not going to be able to perform at our initial expectations, so we adjusted our budget and marketing tactics accordingly," Aviron stated, adding that it wouldn't have made "prudent business sense" to pour more money into a project that received a 23 per cent on Rotten Tomatoes and a D+ CinemaScore. (The distributor had previously bumped the film from an award-season release date to January, a known "dump month".) In response to a report that Hathaway, McConaughey and director Steven Knight were upset with Aviron Pictures for pretty much giving up on marketing Serenity, the independent distributor issued a statement to US film news website Deadline blaming the lack of promotion on poor reviews and box office numbers - a bold move, given that companies generally stay mum on such matters. That said, it can be jarring if you binge the series then immediately watch the movie afterwards.Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway in a scene from "Serenity." It was YEARS later after several rewatches that someone mentioned Firefly and I was blown away. Which is fair honestly, because I watched the movie and loved it, not knowing there even WAS a show. My guess is that it’s all done so that you could still watch and enjoy the movie without too much confusion if you’ve never seen the show they wanted the movie to stand-alone with enough drama to be interesting. Also the show never really gives much detail on what was done to River, whereas the movie basically just tells us outright what was done to her while simultaneously completely rewriting the rescue story. She shot down three guys saving Mal from Nikta, she saved them from the bounty Hunter, etc. Simon questions it again and Mal just repeats “you’re on my crew, why are we still talking about this?” Then in Serenity he says “I look after me and mine, that don’t include you unless I conjur it does.” The movie basically hard-resets the relationship, he sets up very briefly “you’ve been with us for six months and your sister gets to start pulling her weight now” which totally ignores the multiple times River participated in events to save crewmembers and otherwise help. Yeah Mal specified in Firefly that Simon is on his crew, when Simon asks something along the lines of why Mal didn’t sell him out and Mal says “you’re on my crew” as if it’s matter of fact that Mal cares about him. This goes against what we see in the show with Simon being nearly clueless about rivers condition and why this happened to her until visiting the scanner in the hospital, and even then he doesn't know why, just what. Also during the movie breakout Simon gets quite a lot of detail about what they are doing to river and for what goals from the academy director. The whole convo seems off, especially after the rescue of Simon and River from the kidnappers.Īlso I think the movie rewrites Rivers escape from the academy? In episode 1 of the show Simon says something like "I paid them to break her out and put her in cyro", whereas in the movie we see him personally breaking her out himself. ![]() At the end of the TV show I feel Mal sees Simon as his crew through and through, but at the start of the movie they are arguing about River going on the mission and Mal is very cold and says Simon is only crew if Mal says he is. I feel like Simons and Mals relationship has regressed by the start of the movie.
